Controversies over cartoons, circumcisions or killings in the name of “honor”: There is an increasing tendency in multiculturalism to cause conflicts. How should criminal law deal with these issues? This question is being researched by Brian Valerius, legal scholar at the University of Würzburg, Germany.
Should a female teacher of Turkish descent be allowed to wear a Muslim headscarf in a public school? Is the husband in a German-Moroccan marriage entitled to punish his wife physically?
These are just some examples of problematic cross-cultural cases that German courts have been confronted with in recent years. In particular, criminal proceedings involving so-called “honor killings” have been in the spotlight of public attention.

It has often been said that “All forms of extremism are equally bad”; often by people who are extremists. Extremism, in itself, is not wrong. To fight for a just cause and to be uncompromising in that fight is the noblest thing a person can do. People on the left, mislabeled as liberals, are uncompromising in their fight for certain values yet they never refer to themselves, and are never referred to by anyone else, as extremists.
When people on the right start to make noise and air their dissatisfaction, words such as militia, Nazi, skinhead, redneck, racist and many others get routinely thrown around. When people on the left air their dissatisfaction, words such as …
A lot of people that using alternative sources of fuel is just fulfilling your environmental duties. Others use such fuel sources to assuage their own conscience. While using alternative fuel sources can definitely fulfil the above two roles, it is just plain good sense and planning to not depend on the rapidly depleting and environmentally degrading fossil fuels that form the backbone of our economy, and our transport system.
You can start off your use of alternative fuels in your daily commute. If you use your feet to commute, either through walking or cycling, you are at a great disadvantage with the rest of the American populace. Not only will you be healthier and fitter, you …
It was inevitable. The honeymoon that President Barack Obama, and all other presidents, experienced has officially given way to criticism of his policies on the economy and health care to false rumors that he may not be a natural-born U.S. citizen and therefore ineligible to hold the office of president. The criticism reached a fevered pitch when Obama spoke out against the arrest of his friend, Henry Louis Gates, who accused Cambridge, Mass. police of racial profiling.
President Obama entered the White House to much celebration and pageantry. However, despite being liked by many Americans, some of his policies are disliked just as much. Nevertheless, by weathering the storm that all presidents endure, Obama’s presidency can …
Did you know that the United States Federal Government really wants to help you become debt free? Honestly! There are billions of dollars set aside to this end and ready to be distributed to those who apply. The trick is finding what one to apply for, applying and then waiting for your check to arrive.
One of the biggest problems facing the world today is the failing economy. When every penny is budgeted and incomes just cover the bills, there is nothing left for people to put back into the economy, if there is anything at all. For some people, just paying all their bills is an impossible goal.
The magical solution is finding a government grant …
Running for an elected office in Utah comes with its own share of pros and cons. As a result, a few of the upcoming Utah United States senate candidates have been on their toes waiting for the chips to fall. All in all, the next election in Utah will be an interesting one to follow, to say the least.

Contribution to political campaigns is a good way to build up a network of high powered friends that have a say in what takes place on capital hill. If you deep pockets and believe in the cause and convictions of a political candidate, then donating a monetary contribution to the campaign coffers may the right choice for you.
Each election cycle millions of dollars are raised by political hopefuls that are running for public office. The high cost of television commercials and radio spots not to mention the production costs that are involved in …
In the past few weeks the health care reform has been getting increasingly angrier and more violent, no thanks to the crazy extremist of the Republican. However, at least one Republican will dare to stand up against her party to bring stability and order to angry, mistaken, citizens of the Republican party. Only one person has the intellect, the knowledge of health care, the charisma to dispel these angry mobs and turn the debate back to the issues at hand. Who you ask? Who in the Republican party actually knows about health care? Why none other than Sarah Palin.
Hopefully you picked up on my sarcastic tone. If not, well I need to work on my …
Senator Christopher Evans, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, has announced a 14 per cent cut in the 2008-09 Australian permanent skilled migration program intake from 133 500 to 115 000 in response to the global recession and growing unemployment.
While this cut is significant, it should be remembered that the number have only been taken back to the levels that existed in 2004.
The government has also stated that it is now only processing general skills migration visa applications, and granting visas to permanent visa applicants that are State/Territory sponsored, nominated/sponsored by an employer or who have nominated occupations on the new critical skills list.
Further administrative changes saw the removal of building and manufacturing trades from …
